To the west of Arundel is West Sussex’s largest town, Worthing. Nothing more than a small fishing village until 1798 when Princess Amelia visited and bestowed her royal patronage, Worthing grew rapidly into a popular coastal resort in the early 19th century.
Modern Worthing offers the visitor safe beaches, theatres, restaurants, accommodation and easy access to the South Downs and other Sussex attractions. The Society of Voluntary Guides run guides walks around the town during the summer months on Wednesdays and Sundays and the Worthing Museum & Art Gallery is another good spot to learn about the town, past and present.
Nearby is the second largest Iron Age hill fort in the country, Cissbury Ring. The site is maintained by the National Trust and is good walking terrain with great views across the surrounding countryside. There is a lovely walk across the Downs to pagan Chanctonbury Ring. Legend has it that if you run around it seven times anti-clockwise the devil will appear and offer you a bowl of soup for your soul.
