Crowborough is on the fringes of Ashdown Forest and was nothing more than heathland until the Victorian Age when a town developed here on the road between Lewes and Tunbridge Wells.
The town’s most famous resident would have to be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, (author Sherlock Holmes novels) who moved here in 1909 and remained until his death in 1930. He built a large family home, Windelsham Manor, and was buried in the garden upon his death; his wife however had him removed to the family vault some five years later.
Crowborough town lies on top of a hill with the Ashdown Forest lying to the north. The views of the Forest are spectacular. Which contrasts with the modern built up style of the town.
