To the north west of Crowborough is the village of Hartfield, the town lies on the edge of the Ashdown Forest, it is probably named due to the number of deer (hart) that abounded in the area, when the Ashdown Forest was a royal deer-hunting park.
Hartfield is otherwise known as ‘Pooh Country’. A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin lived about a mile outside the village and the local landmarks feature in the famous Winnie the Pooh books.
Fans of the books will enjoy seeing Pooh-Sticks Bridge and the Enchanted Place but be warned the parking facilities in Hartfield can not cope with masses of visitors, so you should leave your vehicle in one of the many Ashdown Forest car parks nearby.
