Christchurch lies on the Avon and Stour estuaries near the Hampshire border and is both an ancient settlement and a modern resort. It was one of the networks of fortified towns, or burghs, Alfred the Great built to keep out the Danes. The towns name changed from Tweoxneam, which means between two rivers, when the first priory was established.

The priory church stands behind the Quay and features architecture from the Saxon period to the Renaissance. It is the longest parish church in the country and the baptistry features a memorial to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and his novelist wife, Mary.

The Red House, which was built as an 18th century workhouse, is adjacent to the priory and is a museum of local history. You can take a lovely 2-mile coastal path walk back towards Bournemouth, which takes you to Hengistbury Head, which is a great wildlife observation point.
