Canterbury sits on the River Stour and has been settled since the Iron Age. Now famous as the cradle of Anglicanism, the town was of strategic importance even before Christianity arrived on British shores. Most famous for its cathedral and for Chaucer's epic, the Canterbury Tales the city has a number of interesting places to visit.

The Canterbury Royal Museum & Art Gallery has a good selection of Roman relics including mosaics, precious metals and the foundations from the largest Roman theatre to be discovered in the country. St Martin's church is the oldest parish church in England and probably dates from the 4th century; there is evidence to suggest that Christianity had reached Canterbury by the end of the Roman occupation.

Canterbury has understandably been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site Status and attracts two million visitors each year. The city is small and a pleasant place to wander and soak up the centuries of culture. There are some good little pubs and eateries, although they can get busy during peak season.
