Margate is the loudest and brashest of the north Kent resorts and was developed as seaside destination for smog-choked Londoners to decamp to. Behind the bright lights and amusements is Margate Old Town, where 17th and 18th century buildings huddle around the harbour.
Quite surprisingly the sleepy town of Margate is home to two caves Margate Caves, and its neighbour, the Shell Grotto. They were formed underneath the Church of Holy Trinity, and in World War two the church was bombed leaving the caves easy to get to.
