Sevenoaks is an ancient Kent town with plentiful medieval timber framed buildings still in evidence. The records of St. Nicholas parish church date back to 1122 and the church also contains a memorial to the poet John Donne, who was rector there between 1616-1631.
The surrounding countryside is quite delightful and there are a number of extremely attractive villages such as Ightham, Farningham, Eynsford and Chevening and Chipstead. The Sevenoaks Museum & Art Gallery is situated above the library and is a good source on information about the town.
To the south east of the town is Knole, one of the finest and largest houses in Britain. It is now run by the National Trust and contains an impressive collection of furniture and works of art, including important paintings by Van Dyck and Gainsborough.
