Newport, the island's capital is more of a commercial centre with a few interesting old quays that date back to it's time as an inland port. More importantly, Newport is on the tourist map for the hilltop fortress of Carisbrooke Castle.
Visitors should flock to the great Norman world of Carisbrooke Castle where you will be thoroughly entertained by the fascinating relics found in the museum. The most famous prisoner held here was Charles I, who was disgracefully caught one night attempting to escape prior to his execution. He only got as far as the bars of his room!
The other fascinating and somewhat weird attraction here is the 16th century well- house that has still got donkeys loitering inside its massive treadmill to raise a barrel 160ft up the well shaft.
