South Stack

South Stack is a tiny islet just a stone's throw from the craggy coast outside of Holyhead. It is the site of one of Wales' most dramatic lighthouses. Sailors have feared the rocks around here for years and a request for a lighthouse dates back as far as 1665, but it wasn't until 1809 that the call was heeded, in order to protect the busy Dublin - Holyhead - Liverpool route.

The coastline is dramatic - granite cliffs rise up nearly 200ft and the air is full of birds and birdcall. This is why most visitors come - the bird life is spectacular and all sorts of high tech gadgetry such as CCTV has been installed to get you in the thick of the action.

South Stack is managed by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) and the Ellins Tower information centre and Lighthouse visitor centre are open from Easter until the end of September.
