The market town of Cardigan is at the south of the famous Cardigan Bay. A slow and easy pace ensure its 19th century character is very much in evidence to this day. You will be greeted by picturesque narrow streets crammed with traditional shops and inns. The Guildhall in the centre of town and the nearby covered market are both worth keeping an eye out for.
Cardigan was founded around the castle of Roger de Montgomery in the 11th century and has been dominated by its covered market place and its port through the ages. It was once one of the most important ports of emigration to North America.
Cardigan is also the start or finish point of a couple of great walks; it is at the north end of the Pembrokeshire coastal path, which takes in nearly 190 miles of spectacular south Wales coastline. It is the start point of the soon to be completed Cardiganshire coastal walk, which will enable people to walk the whole length of Cardigan Bay.
