Starting humbly in the hills at the mysterious Teifi Pools north of Tregaron, running through Lampeter to its estuary at Cardigan on the coast, the Teifi River and its valley have a chanting and romantic image. At the source of the Teifi River are the brooding Teifi Pools, sombre lakes set in broad sweeping moorland quite different from the cosy green valley lower down. There are some excellent walks around here, more challenging than a stroll in the lowlands by the river and perhaps more satisfying for it.
Ancient Celts used to paddle its course in coracles, catching the fresh fish it is well known for; Romans realised its importance and today it is as well known for its rich, gentle landscape as anything else.
There are some wonderful places to visit including the impressive Cilgerran Castle and the countryside is good walking territory. Cardigan and Lampeter are the main towns in the region and make good bases for exploring the valley.
