In the easygoing town of Llandidloes life used to revolve around the market place, the extremely attractive half-timbered heart of the town that dates from the early 17th century.
The town has always had a slightly non-conformist attitude and was the scene of dissent in 1839 when the town's flannel weavers rose up and violence ensued during the attempts to quell their political voice.
Like Machynlleth it has become a popular place for those seeking an alternative lifestyle and it attracts all manner of artists, crafts people and New Agers. Consequently it has a relaxed, folkey feel to it and some interesting and quirky shops and eateries, making it a pleasant and relaxing place to stay or visit. There are also a number of interesting places to visit.
