Machynlleth in the Dyfi Valley is one of mid-Wales most attractive towns. It is hard to believe it today, but as recently as the 1950s the town was seriously considered as a candidate to be the Welsh capital. It had already had this title bestowed on it once in its past - Owain Glyndwr was proclaimed King here and made it the capital of Wales in 1404.
Today the town is popular with crystal-wearing, chakra-realigning New Agers and has a laid back, open-minded feel. There is a weekly market every Wednesday and there are some interesting shops, cafes and places to eat.
In the hills just north of Machynlleth lies the wonderful and fascinating Centre for Alternative Technology, a co-operative that embodies the very best principles of sustainable living. Very inspirational and one of the best days out in Wales. You even get a discount if you come by bike or public transport!
