The Soviet sounding Lake Vyrnwy is an 1100-acre testament to the Victorian's fondness for great edifices combined with practical useability. The land surrounding it is now a nature reserve.
The stern looking dam which marks its southern boundary signifies its function as a reservoir supplying Liverpool and when it was built in 1888 the entire village of Llanwddyn had to be relocated; every inhabitant was rewarded the princely sum of £5 for the inconvenience!
Although a man-made construction it is a naturalist's dream - with nature trails, excellent bird life, good hiking and bike riding. The Vyrnwy Visitor Centre has information about local wildlife as well as an exhibit on the relocation of Llanwddyn. There is also a bird watching centre for devoted ornithologists.
