The unfortunately named Mold is Clwyd’s new county town and lies in the heart of the coalfields of North Wales. Its attractive High Street has a particularly bustling charm on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the open-air markets are in full swing.
Mold is a great base for exploring the Clwydian range and on a clear day from the peak of nearby Moel Famau, you can see six counties.
Nearby Hawarden was made famous but one of the residents of its castle; between 1839 and 1898 four times British Prime Minister, William Gladstone lived here with his Welsh wife, Catherine and the castle is still in the Gladstone family.
