The irony of Caernarfon is that it is in the heartland of nationalist Welsh-speaking Wales, yet the town is probably best known as the site where Edward I asserted English sovereignty over the country and these days is the place of the Prince of Wales’ investiture.

In 1283, one year after the defeat of the last Welsh prince of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, work started on Caernarfon Castle. Edward I ordered that it should be the seat of government, a royal palace and a military stronghold and it is arguably the most impressive of the iron ring of castles.

The castle is the main attraction and houses two museums. The Museum of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and the Prince of Wales Exhibition. Another sight is the Segontium Roman Fort remains and related museum. Caernarfon is the starting point for the narrow gauge West Highland Railway that runs the 25 miles to Rhyd-Ddu.
