The village of Bala is located at the northern tip of the enormous lake, Llyn Tegid. This lake provides the area with a multitude of water sports activities from windsurfing to white water rafting at the Canolfan Tryweryn course, at lake Llyn Celyn. Here water is released from a dam to produce rapids good enough for competition.
The Bala Lake Railway are steam trains that run along the side of lake Llyn Tegid, they provide a relaxing way to take in the surrounding scenery.
Tomen y Bala is a conspicuous mound, found on the north end of the town, it used to be a late Norman motte which would have had a wooden tower on top. In the 18th and 19th centuries Bala was famous for it's knitted clothing and the women used to gather on the mound to knit and chat.
