Barry

Barry was originally a tiny fishing port, the town grew when it was developed in the 1880's as a coal port and the population exploded. The coal trade was growing so fast, even more so than Tiger Bay, Cardiff so a group of colliery owners formed the Barry Railway Company and built the dock at Barry.

By 1900 it was exporting 6 million tons of coal per year. It is joined to Barry Island by a causeway and has a large amusement park near the pebble beach.

Barry Castle is on the outskirts of the town, it is a small ruin but steeped in local history. It is a 13th Century castle which was under ownership of De Barry family.
