Caerphilly

Caerphilly, just a few miles north of Cardiff at the southern end of the Valleys, may be best known for its cheese, a mild crumbly white cheese that goes well with pickle.

The town is home to an elegant castle which commands a site of 30 acres and boasts impressive defences and lake like moats. Built in 1286 to defend the poetically titled Gilbert de Clare against the unfortunately named Lleywelyn the Last it managed to stand for just two years before Llywelyn brought the walls a-tumblin down.
