Like many small towns in this part of Wales; Kidwelly is dominated by its castle. Posing confidently on a bank above the River Gwendraeth, the views form the castle is particularly fine - climb to the top of the impressive gatehouse to look out over the River Gwendraeth, surrounding countryside and coastline.
The castle was established in the 12th century by the bishop of Salisbury as an outpost for Sherborne Abbey in distant Dorset and the gatehouse, dating from 1275, is oldest surviving part of the castle.
Kidwelly also has a small Industrial Museum with free entry. Based in the old tin-plate factory it explores the history of tin-plating in the area and many of the original features and machinery can be viewed. Kidwelly itself is a quiet but pretty town with some good accommodation, places to eat and of course pubs.
