Fishguard is a picturesque port and town in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park often overlooked simply as a place to get ferries to or from Ireland. Although most of the surrounding area of Dyfed is flat, Fishguard sits atop steep cliffs while it's harbour, Lower Fishguard, was considered scenic enough to play the role of Milk Wood in the 1971 film.
The bustling port was once famous for its herrings rather than its procession of cars and lorries. In 1797 Fishguard was also the scene of a bizarre and rather ham-fisted attempt at invading Britain by a Franco-Irish alliance. The port is now home to the Ferry service to Rosslare-Ireland, presently run by Stena. A fast Ferry is in service to make the journey much quicker than in the past.
According to legend the attempt failed when the 'invaders' mistook a band of local ladies for reinforcement troops. These days a tapestry commemorates these events and the locals enjoyed bi-centenary celebrations a few years ago. It can be viewed at the town hall.
