Tenby, like nearby Pembroke, is part of an area known as “little England beyond Wales” and both places share Anglo-Saxon, rather than Welsh, names. Tenby developed in Norman times, as part of the invaders’ attempt to colonise south Wales. The Welsh ransacked the town several times in the 12th and 13th centuries and so the town walls were built to fortify Tenby and their remains can be seen today.

These days Tenby is an extremely attractive resort – it is wedged between two sweeping bays and has medieval buildings built on narrow, winding roads that tumble down hill towards the harbour. While it has a relatively old and conservative population there are plenty of pubs and restaurants to keep visitors entertained. In summer it can become very busy, particularly with hen and stag nights so expect a bit of high jinx.

Just off Tenby is Caldey Island, which boasts an ancient priory and modern monastery. The resident Cistercian monks produce perfume that is sold locally and a visit to the island makes a very pleasant day trip.
