Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands at approximately 10 miles East-West and six miles North-South. Its capital St. Helier is named after the island’s famous hermit who shored up local Christianity and was martyred for the cause.
The town bears the marks of English, French and Portuguese influence, giving it a unique Continental feel and of course, you’ll find a much better climate here than on mainland Britain.
Overlooking the capital is Elizabeth Castle built by Sir Walter Raleigh when he was Governor of Jersey and named after his queen. The coastline is also littered with Martello Towers, designed to defend against French attack under Napoleon.
Another of Jersey’s top attractions is Jersey Zoo, which is often known as 'the zoo that is not a zoo' because of the natural living habitats the animals live in, the world renowned breeding programmes and the raft of conservation work that is undertaken. The zoo was established by the celebrated conservationist and animal behavioural expert Gerald Durrell and is now the headquarters of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.
