The east coast of the Lizard Peninsula stretches from the mouth of the river Helford right around the coast to Lizard Point. It starts with Mawnan whose main attraction is the granite church. Further up the Helford River is Gweek and the Gweek Seal Sanctuary, this open to tour and see the rehailitation of sick and injured seals and hopefully their release back into the sea.
The west coast is home to the village of Mullion, which has a fifteenth century church. It also has a quaint little harbour housing a pleasant beach. However, more attractive beaches can be found at the nearby Polurrian and Poldhu, these are not only pleasing to the eye but a haven for surfers. On a cliff in Mullion, the Marconi Monument records the first transatlantic radio transmission in 1901.
Heading north one comes across the beautiful Loe Bar, a lovely beach, which is sadly not safe to swim at due to strong currents. Loe Pool claims to be the site of King Arthur’s Excalibur’s final resting place.
The village of Porthleven is worth a visit on the 8th of May each year for the ‘Furry Dance’ when the villagers dress up and dance through the streets. Learn about this and more of the Lizard Peninsula’s history at the Helston Folk Museum.
