Tintagel

Tintagel is a small village on the rugged and windswept north Cornish coast and is famous for being the birthplace of the King Arthur. Legend has it that the wizard Merlin lived in a cave among the rocks under Tintagel Castle. At high tide his cave filled with water and the waves brought Arthur and Merlin plucked him out and took him to safety.

Attractions include the sixteenth century remains of Celtic monastery and perhaps the highlight, Tintagel Castle. The Old Post Office is also an interesting curiosity, dating back to the fourteenth century.

A few miles west is the Port of Boscastle, a pretty village with a selection of seventeenth and eighteenth century houses. A little further on is a church that was restored by Thomas Hardy. The highlight is a tad disturbing yet strangely compelling, the Boscastle Museum of Witchcraft in the harbour.
