Launceston is in the very east of Cornwall, only one mile from the Devon border. It is an old, country, market town with medieval remains; the pointed arches of Southgate.
St Thomas’s church dates from the 12th century while the castle ramparts date from the thirteenth century. So steeped in history is Launceston that sixteenth century St Leonard’s Bridge is called the “New Bridge”.
Like many other villages around here it has an air of seclusion from the modern world. A local place of interest is the hamlet of Bolventor, where you will find Jamaica Inn. Daphne du Maurier stayed here in 1930 and featured it in her novel of the same name.
