Barnstaple is one of Britain’s oldest towns and a perfect base for visitors to begin exploration the beautiful North Devon Coastline.
Falling at the head of the Taw estuary, town life in Barnstaple revolved around the huge timber-famed marketplace of Pannier Market.
The town’s heyday was in the 18th century and its centre is largely Georgian to this day. It was once an important harbour but ceased to be so when the Taw estuary silted up. These days the harbour serves as a pleasant waterside walk.
