The ancient Great Torrington is a warm and friendly village perched high on the slopes above the river Torridge.
The town has a long and interesting history, notably for its support to the cavalier army in the civil war. The locals proudly celebrate this aspect of their past with regular costume battle re-enactments.
The impressive situation of the town offers spectacular views over the rolling green, unspoilt countryside of North Devon. This glorious countryside has hardly changed since Henry Williamson wrote his classic novel Tarka the Otter in the 1920’s.
