The ancient settlement of Swindon, which takes its name from the Saxon words for pig and farm, was a quiet, small agricultural centre for many centuries before Isambard Kingdom Brunel put it well and truly on the map.
The Great Western Railway that linked London and Bristol made its way through the town by 1840 and within a few years’ locomotive works were added, to maintain the line’s rolling stock. The new industry employed so many people that Brunel built a Railway Village for the workers to live in. This era is recalled at STEAM, Museum of the Great Western Railway.
The Old Town of Swindon sits on a hill overlooking the relatively new industrial centre and features many old Georgian buildings. It is in Old Swindon that you will find the Swindon Art Gallery and Community Heritage Museum, both of which are located in Bath Road.Photos
