The old town of Dunster is just a short drive along the coast from Minehead, but feels a world away from the busy seaside resort. Just one main street of pretty stone houses and shops, Dunster is most well known for its castle, which dominates the town.
Dunster Castle is an ancient castle with beautiful interior and sub-tropical gardens. The tor has been home to the castle for over 1000 years, it served as a frontier fortress in Saxon times to help fight against Celtic and Viking raiders. Between 1868-72 the architect Anthony Salvin was hired for major re-furbishment adjustments and to get back it's original medieval feel.
Just below the castle is the Yarn Market, which dates from 1609 while the still operating Water Mill, has a little cafe to enjoy views of the river. Dunster has a number of different restaurants and places to stay and there is a visitor centre near the main car park.
