Exford sits on the River Exe and has been the site of a ford or bridge for hundreds of years. The small village has a general store/ post office and couple of traditional inns all set around a picturesque green and its Crown Hotel is one of the most well known in Exmoor.
Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor at 1700ft, is a four-mile hike away, which makes Exford a popular base for walkers. The hill is covered in heather and in the summer it turns a beautiful deep purple. The wildlife is fantastic; you may see Exmoor ponies, red deer, lesser-spotted woodpeckers, snipe, skylarks, kestrels and so much more.
Exford is also where the Devon & Somerset Staghounds have their base and the area is well known for its love of hunting and fishing. There is also good riding nearby.
