Simonsbath lies in the centre of what is incongruously called the Exmoor Forest, a vast expanse of open moor with scarcely enough shade to shelter a lonesome sheep. The area actually used to be a royal hunting ground from which its name is derived.
Wandering along the banks of the River Barle is particularly pleasant and there is also a special children's walk through woodland with animals carved from fallen trees, created by the local ranger.
Simonsbath has a couple of places to stay and there is a place to get a cup of tea and sandwich, but better fare can be found in the surrounding country pubs.
