Princetown is one of the larger centres within the Dartmoor National Park and owes its fame to the close by high security jail Dartmoor Prison.
The town itself has a somewhat grim atmosphere in places. Some of the building where actually built by French and American prisoners, resulting in a close resemblance to the functional stone prison houses!
Nearby Grimspound was occupied some 3000 year ago and is home to Dartmoor's most complete prehistoric settlement, in the form of 24 circular huts.
