Exmouth was a port as far back as Roman times and it became Devon’s first seaside resort in the early 1700s when people started to enjoy the 2 miles of bathing beaches. Due to its early popularity there are a good number of genteel Georgian Terraces overlooking lawns and the sea front, which once house both Nelson and Byron's wives, firmly deposited at number 6 and 12 The Beacon.
Exmouth is situated on the River Exe where its estuary has been recognised as a site of special scientific interest. Birdlife in particular is a curiosity and the nature reserve is a magnet to bird watchers.
The Exmouth Museum is full of the local history; they have various displays including a stationary steam engine, a Victorian kitchen, and Children’s antique lace. They also have a variety of changing exhibitions.
