San Francisco

San Francisco, not a city for the faint hearted! Known for its icy winds, spectacular Golden Gate Bridge, free thinking community, street entertainers and Sea Lions that bask on Pier 39, there is plenty to see and do.

San Francisco is one hilly and steep city. The best way to get around is by streetcar, cable car (both very similar to trams as we know them in Australia), bus and train.

There is much to see in San Francisco, from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the old prison island of Alcatraz. The piers on Fisherman’s Wharf can be a considered by locals as a tourist trap, however they offer entertainment, lots of fudge shops, sea lions and rides.

Chinatown offers great restaurants, excellent shopping especially when it comes to groceries and an insight into a different way of life. To witness some of the spectacular architecture in the area, head downtown to the Civic Centre where there are great examples of Beaux Arts buildings, such as City Hall and the War Memorial Veterans Building.

There are plenty of fine museums to check out, this is great for when it is foggy or just too cold outside. If the weather is great and the skies are clear, why not visit one of the many parks or head to Twin Peaks, San Francisco’s highest points - on a clear day the views are stunning.
