Originally a sugar town, the demise of the industry in the mid 1990’s led to a change of direction toward tourism. Downtown reflects this with a vast array of small shops bent on procuring the tourist dollar. However, quality bargains are still to be found and even with its commercial outlook Kailua still offers affordable lodging and is a great base for exploring the Kona Coast.
