A universal phenomenon, Chinatown sprang out of a need for cultural unity and took over the world – or at least enclaves of it – that grew to include many other Asian influences en route. Displaced people of many ethnicities took refuge in its small securities but the bubonic plague of 1899 had the area quarantined as a slum and much of it was subsequently razed in a very suspect fire.
Characteristic resilience however made for a brave new world risen from the ashes and Chinatown in downtown Honolulu now blooms with prosperity and radiance centered on trade, food and worship. Spiritually we are all part of it and so, we are all invited to partake. Enjoy!
