There are a number of advantages to skiing closer to home. Perhaps the most obvious is accessibility. Travelling in Australia is usually cheaper and closer than venturing overseas, and less time travelling means more time holidaying. Australia offers fantastic skiing and snowboarding for all levels, with twice the total skiable area and more than three times the number of lifts compared to neighbouring New Zealand, and a staggering twenty terrain parks.
The majority of ski accommodation in Australia is 'on snow', like most of the European resorts, meaning you can pretty much ski right off the slopes into your hotel (via apres ski of course)! The convenience of staying on snow allows for increased freedom and flexibility when planning for your day skiing, enabling maximum ski time and offering a more relaxed snow holiday experience. Those who venture across the ditch for a Kiwi ski holiday will find they spend more time getting to the snow from their off snow accommodation in a nearby town, as well as having to navigate hairpin bends getting up and down the mountain each day, and having to be more prepared for their day out on the slopes.
Another advantage of taking a ski holiday in Australia is that you don't have to think about language barriers, overseas travel insurance or foreign currency exchange. On a domestic ski holiday, everything is straightforward and familiar, yet you still get to experience a magical winter holiday.
Australian ski resorts also enjoy a smaller ski population than many overseas ski resorts which can become infuriatingly crowded at times. Smaller numbers of skiers on the slopes means less congestion, less time spent queuing for lifts, and more time to ski. For avid skiers, skiing domestic resorts enables a sense of familiarity with the runs, location and layout of the resort, which makes for an easier ski holiday. Skiing in a domestic resort enables you to meet up with family or friends and develop a community of like-minded skiing enthusiasts.
For those skiing with young children, Australian resorts offer many advantages. Obviously less travelling distance with young children is a huge plus, but also once you're at the ski fields there are fantastic facilities for children. The main resorts in Australia have on-snow childcare at reasonable rates, so you can ski all day knowing your little ones are being safely watched over close by. For children learning to ski, Australia has great ski schools which offer flexible lessons tailored for kiddies enjoyment. Families skiing together will appreciate the safety and security of the smaller Australian ski resorts, compared to larger busier overseas resorts which are often highly populated.
One of the most enjoyable alpine experiences is skiing in the sunshine and Australia provides plenty of this. Overseas resorts are often overcast with adverse weather conditions, and subject to unpredictable resort closures, but Australian resorts are frequented by blue skies and shining sun, with the main resorts open for the majority of the season offering great skiing conditions.
