Described as "Jacobean Mansion Revival style", Government House features a beautiful English-style garden adjacent to Stirling Gardens and the Supreme Court Gardens.
The private gardens are open to the public every Tuesday from 12am to 2pm, subject to no private functions being undertaken.
The foundation stone of the present building was laid in 1859. It was completed in 1863 during Governor Hampton's Term of Office. The plans were made by the Royal Engineers.
Work was carried out by convict labour under their direction and that of the Superintendent of Works. The ballroom was designed by J.H.Grainger and completed in 1899.
