The Darling Range, with its magnificent stands of Jarrah has been an important source of timber since the foundation of the Swan River Colony in 1829. Because of the difficulty of transporting sawn timber to the nearest port at Fremantle, the Rockingham Jarrah Company built one of Western Australia's earliest railways. Its aim was to transport timber from Jarrahdale to a jetty they had constructed at Rockingham.
Rockingham Jarrahdale Heritage Trail encompasses the route that was originally used. Beginning at Railway Terrace the site of Rockingham's original jetty and retracing the route of the 1872 timber railway, this 36 kilometre scenic drive is a must for history enthusiasts.
On completion of the Rockingham Jarrahdale Heritage Trail, it is optional to continue through Jarrahdale to Serpentine Dam and Falls.
