The tiny west coast settlement of Arthur River is the northern entry to the Western Explorer to Corinna. The coastal village is nestled on the banks of the Arthur River, with about 80 holiday homes and a permanent population of around 25 people.
From Arthur River you can also head into the forest for four-wheel drive explorations or take a cruise on the lower reaches of the Arthur River. The river flows through tall eucalypt forests and rainforests to the sea. This pristine Tasmania wilderness area is densely forested with myrtles, sassafras, celery top pine, laurels, blackwood and giant tree ferns and is part of the famous Tarkine wilderness.
The town borders the Arthur-Pieman River Protected Area and you will find facilities for camping, picnics and barbecues. The Western Explorer route is unsealed and takes you to Corinna on the Pieman River, just over 100 kilometres south. Be prepared for all types of weather. The west coast receives the full impact of the Roaring Forties, so make sure you have warm clothing and wet weather gear at all times of the year.
