The Nullarbor Plain stretches from Ceduna (SA) to Norseman (WA). The Eyre Highway is named after John Eyre - the 1st European to make the east-west crossing. Back then it took him 5 months. These days, it'll take you roughly 13.5 hours by car. The distance by road betweeen Adelaide and Perth is 2700km and The Nullarbor crossing is almost half the trip. The longest distance between fuel stops is 200km.

The road was fully sealed in 1976 and is a relatively easy but very long drive. Make sure to get your car checked and stocked with water and basic supplies before embarking across the Nullarbor. Beginning at Ceduna, the Aboriginal word "Chedoona" - a place to sit down and rest. Ceduna has shopping, banking and business services and a regional airport. It's 72 km to the next town - Penong. Made up of a roadhouse, general store, post office, Penong Hotel and Caravan Park.

Penong to Nundroo - 78 km. The Nundroo Hotel Motel & Roadhouse has accommodation and take away food. Davis Motors is one of the few places along the Nullarbor providing complete mechanical repairs and a towing service. 32km to the coast is Fowlers bay, an isolated, defunct whaling station. Facilities are basic, there is a caravan park.

Nundroo to Nullarbor - 145 km. Nullarbor Roadhouse has fuel, food and accommodation and is an access point to view the Southern Right Whales.

Nullarbor to Border Town - 187 km. This is the scenic part of the trip, dotted with lookouts. View the famous Bunda Cliffs. Southern Right Whales can be seen here in their nursery grounds between May and October.

Border Town to Eucla - 13km. Eucla has some interesting ruins - the derelict jetty and the old telegraph station. There are also caves around Eucla. The Amber Motel has accommodation rooms & campsites. Fuel, food and basic supplies available in town. Quarantine regulations are strict going across the border with inspection stations at Eucla and Ceduna.

Eucla to Mundrabilla - 67 km. The Mundrabilla Roadhouse which has accommodation, is open 6.30am to 12am. Campsites available.

Mundrabilla to Madura - 116 km. 2km west of Madura is a scenic lookout. Expect to see sweeping views of Madura Pass and the Roe Plains. Madura Roadhouse is open 6.30am to 8.30pm Madura to Cocklebiddy - 90 km. Deviate to see an Aboriginal mission's stone ruins and some of the Nullarbor Caves. Cocklebiddy Roadhouse and The Wedgetail Inn Hotel Motel will provide for your comfort and supplies.

Cocklebiddy to Caiguna - 64 km. The John Eyre Motel and Caiguna Road House can provide you with accommodation and meals. Campsites also available. Caiguna to Balladonia - 182 km. Welcome to the longest & straightest stretch of road in the world! - 146.6 km. Balladonia has a a population of 9 and a Museum, a Hotel Motel & Road House. Camping also available.

Balladonia to Norseman - 192 km. Congratulations, you have crossed the Nullarbor Plain! Norseman has a population of about 1600 people and as you would expect for a town of this size it has a decent range of facilities. A great place to stop, rest and have a look around the edge of the West Australian Goldfields.
