Touring The Kimberley
Day 1 After Broome, depart via the Roebuck Roadhouse and the Great Northern Highway. At Derby visit the Prison Boab Tree and the Wharfingers House Museum. If you can, put aside a full day for Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek, (145km east). Day 2 As you travel east towards Fitzroy Crossing, you're either beginning to gain an appreciation of the vastness of the Kimberley, or really not liking it at all Arriving early will allow you ample time for a tour of the beautiful Geikie Gorge. Day 3 As the road slowly veers north, the undulations of the surrounding countryside become more apparent. If you are travelling in a 4 wheel drive, a 260-kilometre (162-mile) return trip detour to Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater is highly recommended. Sites in and around Halls Creek include Caroline Pool, Sawpit Gorge and Palm Springs. A visit to the ruins at Old Halls Creek is also well spent. If time permits, take a day tour to the magnificent Bungle Bungle Ranges in the Purnalulu National Park.
Day 4 Travelling north you will pass some of the most spectacular scenery the Kimberley has to offer. The Carr Boyd and O'Donnel Ranges break up vast plains and open road.
From Kununurra take a cruise on Lake Argyle or Lake Kununurra or explore Argyle Diamond Mine.
