All parts of County Durham and the Tees Valley area are easy to travel to and from both the UK and overseas by all forms of transport.
Direct flights to Durham Tees Valley Airport, near Darlington, include scheduled domestic and international flights plus holiday charter planes. The airport's name came under fierce debate during 2003, the new name, "Durham Tees Valley Airport" replaced the former name, Teesside International Airport in late 2004. The change was not liked by Middlesbrough or Redcar voters who reckon that the airport is closer to their towns than to Durham.
Alternatively, Leeds, Bradford and Newcastle airports are within 90 and 30 minutes drive from Durham respectively. Birmingham and Manchester international hub airports are within two hours 30 mins to three hours 30 mins drive.
The ports at Hull and Newcastle offer regular ferries to Holland and Scandinavia, making the area easily accessible to and from mainland Europe by sea.
Excellent road and rail connections make travel by car or train between London and the area both quick and uncomplicated. The A1 dual carriageway runs north to south via Darlington and Durham. The A19 runs through Middlesbrough and Hartlepool. The main north-east London to Scotland train line brings intercity services to Darlington.
