Mt Surprise is the first town within the Gulf Savannah encountered by visitors approaching from the east.
It is an ideal area to fossick for gemstones, but for the not so energetic, there's a great display at the service station.

The Undara lava fields in the west of Mt. Surprise is the toe of the lava flow which originated from the 164 craters of the McBride Plateau.
There are basalt tunnels which run for some 100 miles underground and can only be accessed through the Savannah Guide Post located at the Undara Lava Lodge on the Undara Volcanic National Park.
