The Durham & Teesside area is well served by motorways and dual carriageways to the rest of the UK. The A1(M) motorway runs north to south, close to Darlington and Durham, providing good roads to London and Scotland.

From the West Durham Dales, the A66 continues to the Lake District and the north-west of England. Driving on the A66 can be hazardous in winter - the road near Barnard Castle and Bowes is often closed because of deep snow drifts. Tall red and white marker poles along the edges of the road indicate how deep the drifts can be.

Industrial Teesside towns of Middlesbrough, Redcar and Hartlepool - are on the A19 dual carriageway which passes north - south almost parallel to the Cleveland coast. This busy road is sometimes closed due to high winds.

Driving times to Durham: From London - A1 and M1 270 miles approx - 4 hours 50 mins drive. From Birmingham - A1, M1, M42 and M6 - 190 miles approx - 3 hours 25 mins drive. From Manchester - A1 and M62 - 130 miles approx - 2 hours 20 mins drive.
