The contemporary art movement in Papua New Guinea had its beginnings in the late 1960s. The unique wealth and diversity of the native cultures has provided an almost limitless source of stories and inspiration for the artists.

The juxtaposition of themes from traditional village life with images from the modern urban environment adds a new tension to the contemporary works.The PNG art movement is included in regional and national galleries throughout the Pacific and European region.
