As would be expected, London has excellent road links with the rest of the UK. The M1, M4, M40 and M11 motorways all connect to the notorious M25 circular around London. Driving yourself around London is the least recommended transport option - especially for visitors.

The Congestion Charge applies in Greater London - a fee to drive on any road within the designated area of central London. Will it succeed in reducing the perpetual traffic jams, road rage and pollution? Most car hire firms have specific policies and advice about the congestion charge, check it carefully or a bill could follow you home.

The Congestion Charge is currently £8. This may rise in 2007 when the congestion zone is set to expand.
