Various public transport initiatives encourage visitors to use buses and other alternatives to private cars to try and reduce the impact of pollution and congestion, especially within the Lake District National Park. There are limited Sunday services on main bus routes throughout the year and most summer Sundays.
The Environmental Transport Association states that bus services on "main routes through the Lake District are as good as any city services." Entrance to some attractions within the park are free to bus users - car owners are charged for parking.
The area is served by two main bus companies:
Stagecoach - across the Lakes and Cumbria White Star Motors - Carlisle, Cumbria into Scotland
Stagecoach provide most buses and have details of especially scenic bus routes including:
Coniston Rambler: Bowness-on-Windermere - Coniston Ennerdale Rambler Free Bus: Maryport - Cockermouth - Ennerdale Lakeslink: Lancaster - Kendal - Keswick - Carlisle (through the heart of the Lakes)
Pick up a printed guide to all Stagecoach buses from Tourist Information Centres at Windermere, Waterhead, Ambleside, Grasmere, Keswick or Carlisle and Lancaster bus stations.
