The South Devon and Dartmoor region is easily accessible from all directions by road, rail, air and sea.
Plymouth and Exeter Airports are both located within the South Devon area with Plymouth Airport offering four flights a day from Gatwick Airport, which receives flights from destinations worldwide. Exeter Airport is primarily used by holiday charters.
Ferries sail from Plymouth Ferryport, South Devon to Roscoff in France all year. Summer timetables also include ferry crossings to Santander, Spain.
Poole Harbour lies approximately 120 miles to the east of Plymouth, from where both regular and superfast ferries cross to France. Ferries to both Guernsey and Jersey also sail from Poole.
Rail travel through South Devon can be made along the mainline between Bristol and Penzance, which passes through Exeter, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot, Totness and Plymouth. Branchlines then connect to Torquay and Paignton, Exmouth, Gunnislake and Looe.
Driving to South Devon provides few difficulties for those chosing to explore the coast and moors by car. Exeter, the major built up town, is just off the M5 motorway on the A30 and A380 interchange. To the south of Exeter, lies Exmouth, which can be reached via the A379 heading south towards Torquay. Travelling in a north-easterly direction from this area, along the A30, will take you to the town of Honiton passing close to Ottery St Mary. To the extreme west of the region along the A3064 and A374 lies Plymouth, which is connected all the way from Exeter via the A38. Situated south of Exeter, along the A380, is Newton Abbot, which provides links with the coastal towns of Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Dartmouth.
